Biography

Helen Bruce was born in Durham. She currently studies with Leah Marian-Jones and recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with distinction, receiving Leverhulme scholarship to attend the MA Opera course. She previously studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the Mmus postgraduate vocal studies course. During her time there, she successfully auditioned for the Opera Associates and Outside Engagements programmes offered by the conservatoire and performed in many concerts, recordings and operas as a result.
Prior to her Masters at GSMD, she read Music at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with honours. At Edinburgh she won the Donald Francis Tovey award for performance, the Eileen Cameron Music award for outstanding contribution to the musical life of Edinburgh as well as the Bucher-Fraser scholarship for postgraduate study, all awarded by the University. She has performed lead roles in many operas ranging from Madame Popova The Bear (Mahogony Opera) under the baton of Oliver Gooch, directed by Freddie Wake-Walker, to Hansel (Orchestra of the Royal Borough) under the baton of Paul Wingfield. She performed with Opera South East as Dido and since then has been asked to sing for the Glyndebourne Festival Chorus, Thursford Christmas spectacular and has performed as the guest soloist for Sunderland football club at the Stadium of Light.
Operatic work includes the role of Orlofsky Die Fledermaus (Aquarian Opera), Marcellina Le Nozze di Figaro (RWCMD Opera course production at the Wales Millennium Centre directed by Harry Fehr) and Mercedes Carmen (St Magnus Festival), Cherubino Marriage of Figaro (Winterbourne Opera), street chorus/soloist in Bernstein's Mass for the 2012 Proms, Mrs Chin/Old Crone Night at the Chinese Opera for British Youth Opera, Lucretia The Rape of Lucretia (RWCMD directed by Donald Maxwell), Madame Popova The Bear (RWCMD, La Mortella in Ischia), Carmen for Winterbourne Opera and chorus for Garsington Opera in June 2013. She sang in the chorus for Welsh National Opera's production of Schoenberg's Moses und Aron with performances at the Royal Opera House. and the role of Witch for Pimlott Foundation's production of Hansel and Gretel. Most recent work includes chorus for English National Opera's production of The Force of Destiny.
